March 22, 2005 Alta Harris Creek was announced by the Harris family, Trout Unlimited and the Land Trust of the Treasure Valley. About fifty people attended the signing ceremony for the conservation easement for the stream channel.
Don Alloway served as master of ceremonies for the announcement.
"Alta Harris Creek is one of the most significant conservation projects ever undertaken along the Boise River. The design and conservation techniques of the creek will improve fish habitat in one of the most spectacular urban rivers in the United States. Alta Harris Creek and the associated Dallas Harris Legacy Riverwalk will make high quality riparian area experience highly accessible to people who live in or visit Harris Ranch." -- Millie Davis of the Harris Family.
"As you look around Idaho, and indeed, throughout the West, youšll see that the best, the most successful conservation projects occur when people of differing interests take the time to collaborate, to find common ground, and to work together. This project is a product of precisely that kind of collaboration. The Harris family, with ranching in their blood, brought their enormous generosity and love for the land and the river. We were lucky to be able to match that generosity with the efforts of Trout Unlimited to restore and conserve coldwater fisheries like the Boise River; the expertise of the Land Trust of the Treasure Valley in land conservation; and the expertise of Idahošs Department of Fish and Game in creating appropriate wildlife habitat. It is through collaborative efforts like this one that much of the best work of conservation is done." -- James Piotrowski, President of the Ted Trueblood Chapter of Trout Unlimited.
Conservation easement documents are signed. L to R James Piotrowski, Millie Davis, John Caywood (Land Trust of the Treasure Valley), Alta Harris and Felicia Burkhalter.
Boise Mayor David Bieter makes some brief remarks congratulating all the parties involved in the project.
