Recently planted vegetation grows along the banks of Alta Harris Creek. These photos were taken in early June 2005.
This first photo above shows sedges and rushes growing on the bank in the foreground.is looking upstream at the bottom end of the lower section of channel. All these photos are of the lower channel that filled with groundwater beginning in April. The sedge plants are from Wildlife Habitat Nursery in Princeton, Idaho.
This photo looks across the stream to the south bank where the sedges and rushes are growing vigorously. There is also one planted willow in the center of the photo. Pieces of sod in the water are also growing riparian vegetation that will later be transplanted to other locations along the channel.
Given the cool and wet spring the vegetation away from the channel is lush in this photo. Later in the summer things are expected to change.
On the near bank one can see a couple of dogwood plants. They look like sticks. Overall the dogwood plantings are surviving at a lower rate than the sedges because the dogwood were bare root plants.
No, there is nothing wrong with the photo. The white specks are cottonwood tree seeds blown in from the cottonwood trees nearby. If we are lucky we will get some seeds to geminate along the banks.
