With fall giving way to winter the plants go dormant and it is time to cut and tranplant cuttings of willow and cottonwood to plant along Alta Harris Creek. More than two dozen TU members and other volunteers helped out on Friday and Saturday November 11 and 12. On Friday the willow and cottonwood were cut in two locations near the Boise River, including one in the Harris Ranch area near the old Boise Cascade millsite just south of Warm Springs Mesa and across the River from Bown Crossing. The other location was in Garden City.
Willow cuttings were brought to a central location for processing. Cuttings were delimbed and separated by size.
Zachary Clayton, Jesse Dark and Vail Dark helped out.
The cuttings were placed in Alta Harris Creek on Friday afternoon with the bottom ends in the water so rooting can be more successful.
Steve Clayton briefs the crew on the work to be done on Saturday.
Volunteers spread along the banks of the channel and begin to drive the cuttings into the ground.
The sedges planted several months prior can be seen along the water line. Willow and cottonwood are placed higher up on the banks.
For some of the larger cutting a two-person auger was used to drill into the ground to reach water level.
