Julia Creek Daylighting Project -- 2007
In early 2007 the Ted Trueblood Chapter and Boise Parks and Recreation initiated the daylighting of Julia Creek by constructing a stream and removing a culvert in Julia Davis Park. The culvert conveys water from the park lagoon to the Boise River. An 80-foot section of culvert will be removed and an open stream channel will be created in the section of the park between the paved bike path and the Boise River.

Culvert removal will create a stream channel with a modest water flow to the Boise River, with the objective of creating 3,000 square feet of riparian/wetland habitat and enhancement of another 4,000 square feet of riparian habitat along the Boise River. Project activities include removal of sod layer and soils covering the culvert, relocation of an irrigation line, and extraction of approximately 80 feet of a 30-inch diameter culvert. This section will be filled in. A new channel will then be excavated in a westerly direction. Construction work would include shaping the channel bottom and banks, and planting riparian/wetland plant species as well as various upland areas. We will place erosion control wattles to form the channel banks. We also plan to monitor results of this project such as colonization of channel by macroinvertebrates. Opportunities also exist to include interpretive and educational information at the project site in Julia Davis Park along the paved bicycle path.
Project Partners
Boise State University is located on the south side of the Boise River across from Julia Davis Park and this culvert removal project. BSU will assist in monitoring the new stream.

Picture above shows the existing culvert lies underneath the section of road with the asphalt patch. This section will remain in place but the culvert between the bikers and the river in the photo will be removed and a channel created that meanders westerly toward the river as shown in the aerial photo above.
