Julia Creek Daylighting Project -- 2007

In 2007 the Ted Trueblood Chapter and Boise Parks and Recreation completed the daylighting of Julia Creek by constructing a stream and removing a culvert in Julia Davis Park. The culvert conveys water from the park lagoon to the Boise River. An 80-foot section of culvert was removed and an open stream channel exceeding 300 feet now flows in Julia Davis Park paralelling the paved bicycle path before it empties into the Boise River.

Support for this project was made possible by donations from the Edwards Mother Earth Foundation, the US Environmental Protection Agency Five-Star Restoration Program, and in-kind goods and services from Boise Parks & Recreation, other city departments, Ada County Sheriffs Office, Meridian Academy, and Trout Unlimited. The Ada County Highway District made a signficant contribution to expand the project beyond its original scopt, tripling the stream channel length.

Culvert removal made it possible to create a stream channel with a modest water flow to the Boise River, 0.5 to two cfs throughout the year, and the creation of 3,000 square feet of riparian/wetland habitat and enhancement of another 4,000 square feet of riparian habitat along the Boise River. Project activities included removal of sod layer and soils covering the culvert, relocation of an irrigation line, relocation of two trees, and extraction of approximately 80 feet of a 30-inch diameter culvert. The new channel was excavated in a westerly direction. Construction work included shaping the channel bottom and banks, and planting riparian/wetland plant species as well as various upland areas. Students from Meridian Academy led some planting efforts, along with TU members and Earthy Day 2007 community volunteers. We used erosion control wattles to form the channel banks. We have monitored results of this project and fish have colonized the channel in the past year. In May 2008 Meridian Academy and Boise Parks added interpretive and educational information at the project site in Julia Davis Park along the paved bicycle path.
