Boise River Spawning Gravel Placement Project

July 2005

On July 16, 2005 the Ted Trueblood Chapter held a work outing in Boise where we rolled up our sleeves and did something good to improve coldwater fish habitat. That day we undertook the creation of new gravel spawning beds in two side channels of the Boise River near the River Run housing development and the Warm Springs Golf Course.

An electrofishing survey conducted in the fall of 2004 by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game indicated that there is a self sustaining population of wild brown and rainbow trout living in the reach of river from Barber Park downstream to Eagle. However, quality spawning habitat is in short supply.

Our TU chapter partnered in the project with IDFG, the Rotary Club of Boise and the Boise Parks and Recreation Department. We had a good turnout with more than 40 volunteers, and we had a fun time, good camaraderie, and a beautiful riverside setting as a backdrop.

We appreciate the support and cooperation of adjacent landowners along The Island development within River Run and the Boise City Canal Company.
